Niah National Park is open year-round, but several time-sensitive factors shape every visit: cave access hours, the bat exodus timing, seasonal weather, and nest-harvesting closures. This article covers each one.

Park opening hours

Niah National Park operates 08:00 to 17:00 daily for day visitors. The park office at Pangkalan Lobang is staffed during these hours; overnight guests at the park hostel can use facilities outside these hours. The boardwalk to the caves is accessible from 08:00 to approximately 16:00 (last entry timed to allow return before dark).

Cave access hours

The Great Cave is open during park hours. Guided cave tours depart twice daily at 08:00 and 14:00. The Painted Cave closes earlier (last entry approximately 15:00) because the trail extension requires more time to complete safely. The cave boardwalk closes if water levels rise after heavy rain — check at the park office on arrival.

Bat exodus timing (the highlight)

The mass wrinkle-lipped bat exodus happens 20–40 minutes before sunset every evening. Sunset times in Sarawak vary about 45 minutes across the year:

  • December–January: Sunset ~18:00 → arrive at cave mouth platform 17:00
  • March–April: Sunset ~18:30 → arrive 17:30
  • June–July: Sunset ~18:45 → arrive 17:45
  • October–November: Sunset ~17:50 → arrive 16:50

Sit on the cave-mouth viewing platform; bats emerge in a continuous column for 20–45 minutes. Bring binoculars and a red-light torch (white light disrupts the bats' echolocation).

Cave closure periods (nest harvest seasons)

Licensed edible-nest swiftlet harvesting happens twice a year:

  • February–March: First harvest of the year
  • July–August: Second harvest

During these periods sections of the Great Cave may be closed to visitors. The bat exodus continues regardless and is unaffected by harvesting. Confirm cave-access status with the park office before travel during these windows.

Best months to visit

  • May–September (drier): Best walking conditions on the boardwalk, fewer mosquitoes, no flooding risk
  • November–February (wet): Heavier rain, slippery boardwalk, occasional cave-trail flooding. But fewer visitors and cooler temperatures
  • March–April / October: Transition months with mixed conditions — generally good but variable

How long to plan

  • Day trip from Miri: Possible. Bus 07:00 → arrive park 09:00 → caves + boardwalk → bat exodus 18:00 → late bus back. Long day but feasible.
  • 1 night / 2 days: Recommended. Allows morning bird walk, full cave visit, bat exodus, dinner, second morning at a relaxed pace.
  • 2 nights: Optimal for serious cave/archaeology interest. Time for both caves, the Bukit Kasut walk, and a sunrise river boat.
