Niah National Park is reached entirely by road. There is no airport closer than Miri (110 km north) and no rail connection. The journey from Miri takes about 1.5–2 hours by road. This article covers every transport option from Miri, Bintulu, and Kuching.

From Miri (the most common starting point)

Miri is the nearest city with an airport. Most international visitors fly into Miri, stay one night, then take ground transport to Niah the next morning.

Option A — Public bus (cheapest)

Express buses run from Miri Pujut Bus Terminal toward Bintulu/Kuching daily — ask for a stop at the Niah junction. Journey time 1.5–2 hours. Fare MYR 15–25 one-way. Departures roughly every 1–2 hours from 06:30 to 17:00. At the Niah junction you take a local taxi or van the final 15 km to the park HQ at Pangkalan Lobang (MYR 15–25).

Option B — Shared van / minibus

Shared vans from Miri are MYR 30–40 per person and go directly to Niah without the junction transfer. Less frequent than buses; ask at the bus terminal or your Miri hotel reception.

Option C — Grab (most convenient)

A Grab from central Miri to Niah park HQ costs approximately MYR 130–160 one-way. Journey time 1.5 hours. Convenient if you have luggage or are travelling as a group of 3–4 (split the cost). Return Grabs from Niah are nearly impossible to find — arrange the return with the same driver, or take the bus back.

Option D — Self-drive

The drive from Miri is straightforward — follow the Pan Borneo Highway south, exit at the Niah junction, and follow signs to Pangkalan Lobang. Free parking at the park HQ. Worth considering if you're combining Niah with Lambir Hills or other regional sites in the same trip.

From Bintulu

Bintulu is 90 km south of Niah. Express bus from Bintulu Bus Terminal to Miri (via Niah junction) — about 1 hour to the junction, then taxi the final 15 km. Fares similar to the Miri route.

From Kuching

Kuching to Niah is a long journey (~700 km, 11–13 hours by bus). Most travellers fly Kuching → Miri (45 min, MYR 200–400 return) and proceed from Miri as above. There is no direct express bus from Kuching to Niah — all routes connect via Miri or Bintulu.

Final stage: into the park

The park HQ at Pangkalan Lobang sits across the Niah River from the cave complex. After arrival at HQ:

  1. Pay park entry fee at the office (MYR 20 adult non-Malaysian)
  2. Buy a cave permit if you plan to enter the caves (MYR 5 additional)
  3. Cross the river by short boat (MYR 1 each way, runs continuously)
  4. Walk the 3.5 km elevated boardwalk through primary rainforest to the Great Cave

Door-to-door time estimates

  • Miri hotel → Niah park HQ (Grab): 1.5–2 hours
  • Miri hotel → cave mouth (boardwalk walk included): 2.5–3 hours
  • Kuching airport → Miri airport (flight + ground transfer): 4–5 hours total
